Currently, only few pilot projects and initiatives have addressed NID elements for birds, and these are often limited in scope. However, given the significant expansion of offshore energy projects planned by 2030 and beyond, we anticipate that the coming years will see considerable progress in the conceptual development, testing, and implementation of above-water NID measures.

In this context, the NID4BirdLIFE project aims to accompany and accelerate this progress, supporting the Black-legged Kittiwake population by creating NID solutions on the walls of the Princess Elisabeth Energy Island in Belgium.

Throughout the project, consortium partners aim to collect, analyse, and monitor the approaches, perspectives, and experiences of various stakeholders with regard to NID solutions for bird species. A central pillar of this effort is creating opportunities for mutual learning and collaboration among key actors.

RGI is pleased to organise an expert workshop on 18 November in Brussels, which will serve as an open and collaborative forum to:

Explore how NID could benefit bird populations, using real-world examples such as the Princess Elisabeth Energy Island.

Share initial findings from a targeted stakeholder engagement effort in the context of the NID4BirdLIFE project.

Jointly develop principles to guide the implementation of NID solutions for birds in offshore energy projects.

We are convening a diverse group of voices, including wind developers, TSOs, NGOs, policymakers, and researchers, to discuss the different factors to consider when developing and implementing NID solutions for birds.

Manon joined RGI in 2022. She is currently working as a Manager in the Energy and Nature team and is in charge of the SafeLines4Birds project. Prior to RGI, Manon worked as an ecologist in a consulting office in Berlin, engaged in the protection of bat populations in Europe in the context of onshore wind energy projects. She also worked on diverse projects in Africa, particularly in the protection and conservation of African mammals. Manon holds a Master’s degree in Biodiversity conservation from Université de Perpignan in France and completed her Master’s thesis in South Africa.
